what happens in poland

Postitamise hetkel olen ilmselt juba Riias. Long story short: kĂ€isin analĂŒĂŒsiseminaril vĂ€ikelinn Czerskis, ĂŒritus ise oli ĂŒhe eelneva projekti jĂ€relseminar, kestes vaid 3 pĂ€eva.

Andsime ka kohalikus algkoolis inglise keele tunni, mille peale ma muidugi ĆĄoki sain, et 5 aastat keelt Ă”ppinud lapsed oskavad öelda vaid “my name is..”.

English: I am sitting in the Warsaw Chopin Airport while writing this post, waiting for my morning flight to Riga. When this goes up, I’ll probably be in Riga already. Long story short: I attended an analysis seminar of a project that was held before and it only lasted for 3 days this time. During these three days, things that have never happened to me or during my projects, happened. I think we’ve all heard stories about Poland: how it is easy to get your things stolen etc. but it is hard to grasp it before being in that situation yourself. It was Friday night and people were partying downstairs – I was quite tired, so I decided to go to bed. Since my roommate had the key and I couldn’t find her, I couldn’t lock the door. I had had around an hour of sleep when I hear someone entering the room and putting the light on and starting to rummage around my roommates suitcase. Half asleep, of course I thought it was my roommate.. until they pulled out my suitcase from under my bed. Then I turned around and asked in Estonian: “what are you doing?” and then I see it.. it wasn’t my roommate, it was some young tall guy running out. Of course I checked if all our things were there and wrote to my roommate as well. She came and she found that her reimbursment cash (over 100 euros) was not in her wallet.

We talked to the organizers and it was decided that nothing could be done at that moment. We went to bed and about half an hour later, when I was again almost sleeping, I hear someone yelling “HEY! HEY! HEY!”, someone running in the corridor and some more yelling. It turned out that the thief had hidden in the toilet next to my room the whole time and then some Spanish girls found him, he panicked and ran away, hitting one of the girls as well. The next day we had a daytrip to Hel and Gdansk and in the bus it turned out that the thief had left his phone in the toilet – a big help. Some real CSI/Sherlock shit went down in the bus, with the organizers and some volunteers trying to find anything from a locked phone. And they did – they still saw the notifications on the screen. At one point the whole bus laughed because they guy’s mom had written to him to take off his dirty shoes and wash his smelly feet. Anyway, somehow through detective work, they found out the name – it was one of the guys working in the hotel staff.

When we got back, we had to see the guy and testify if it was him who we saw (some other people saw his face as well). Tbh, I only saw him from the back, but even then I was 99% sure. Still, in the end they didn’t have enough evidence, cause the guy made up some shitty excuses etc. Ok, we thought it was done, but no – for some reason the guy showed up that night with his friend and in the end there was a kind of a fight between them and some Italian and Greek guys. What even. Later it also became known that some Turkish people had their money and documents stolen and one guy tried to steal my moneybag when I was waiting for my train in Tczew as well. Fun storytime.

Actually, besides all that, it was fun and a cool experience as well, but it proved that there are sooo many different… too different people in the world. It was great to visit all these places that I would not go ever when it wasn’t that kind of a project. We also visited the local primary school and gave a brief English lesson, from which I kinda got a shock, ’cause the children who had studied the language for 5 years could only basically say “my name is..”  But yes, I also made many pictures, but they will be in the next post.

dance.. and other drugs

English: And already it has been more than half of March… and I have not written anything. There are seeral reasons for that: for one, there hasn’t been anything remotely interesting to write about and secondly, I’m just thinking how much should I actually share on the blog..

Couple of weeks ago it was the time for our second early-morning-videoshoot with our dance group for our upcoming promo video. This time it was not as cold as the first time! Hopefully the end result will be awesome. We also competed in the dance competition “Golden Cup” as well, in the Tartu semi-final. We performed with our dance called “Shaken”, which qualified to the final in an another dance competition “Schooldance” – though, I couldn’t dance there, because according to the age restrictions, I was just about half a year too old. So this time me and some other girls were also able to compete and we sure ‘shook’ the stage. Everything went good, the feeling was awesome, but thanks to some other “circumstances”, at the end of the concert I still had a concrete taste of shit in my mouth. Well, we will see if we qualify to the final probably in April. Until then I can work on my solo and at the end of April we also have European Cup to compete in.

new year| turkey pt 1

TĂŒrki minek selgus juba novembris, kuid trip ise tuli kuidagi vĂ€ga kiirelt kĂ€tte. Tegu jĂ€lle projektiga, seekord lĂ€bi Noored Ühiskonna Heaks organisatsiooni. Toimumiskohaks tĂŒrklaste jaoks ‘vĂ€ikelinn’ Usak oma 500 000 inimesega ja teemaks “Inclusion of disadvataged youth with art”. Powernap tehtud, otsustasime linnas ringi jalutada, sest esimesel pĂ€eval pidid enamus teised riigid saabuma. Söömisega on ka naljakas, hommikusöögiks saime paar kĂŒlma friikartulit, 5 oliivi ja kolm kurgiviilakat…are you kidding me. Õnneks saime projekti osa siiski kĂ€ima ja teistega tuttavaks, rahvas on Ă”nneks vĂ€ga normaalne ja Ă”htul tuli juba esimene pidu. JĂ€rgmise pĂ€eva veetsime projekti asjadega tegelemisega, ehk siis erinevad grupitööd, analĂŒĂŒsimine jne. Õhtul lĂ€ksime osa rahvaga traditsioonilist TĂŒrgi teed jooma. TĂŒrgi magustoidud eesotsas baklavaga on ikka rĂ€me magusad – samas tĂ€naval ĂŒlekaalulisi inimesi ei hakka vĂ€ga ĂŒldse silma. TĂ€navapilt on ĂŒleĂŒldiselt ikka midagi muud: iga nurga peal mosee, enamus naistel pead kaetud, 5x pĂ€evas kĂ”lab ĂŒle linna moseedest “Ezam” ehk kutse palvele ning kodutuid koeri on vĂ€ga palju ringi jooksmas.

English: It became evident already in November that I have a project in Turkey in January, but the trip itself somehow arrived so fast. This time the project is through a different organization than my previous ones and it takes place in the city of Usak, which Turks consider to be a small town with ‘only’ 500 000 people. The topic is “Inclusion of disadvataged youth with art”. Tartu-Tallinn-Istanbul-Usak and we already got our first culture shock around the bus station in Istanbul: men screaming at you on the streets, people smoking absolutely everywhere no matter if it is a street or a cafe or whatever. Maybe it was only that place but we will see. The bus ride from Istanbul to Usak took 8 hours and when we arrived we already took a power nap. After that we decided to walk around, cause other countries hadnt arrived yet. It was evident that the culture is so different and no one really speaks English. The first evening already brought some negative surprises about the organizational part: accommodation was dirty, the laundry was not cleaned, problems with food etc. On the second day the situation didnt improve that much and the language barrier was probably one of the reasons. Also, people do not care about the schedule and what complicates the logistics is that the accommodation and the venue with activity room etc are so far from each other. The whole eating thing is funny as well: for breakfast we got like a few slices of cucumber, some olives and slices of cold fries – are you kidding me. Luckily we got the whole project part going and other participants are really cool as well and we already had our first party the first evening. Most of the next day was spent doing group activities and analyzing things and later we with some people went to drink traditional Turkish tea and eat some dessert – the desserts are reallllly sweet, but you wouldnt really see overweight people on the streets. The street view is much different: on basically every corner you see a mosque, most women have their heads covered, 5 times a day there is a call for prayer from the mosques, “Ezan” and there are many homeless dogs running around. The project schedule is all over the place, but we’ll see, maybe things will still improve.

To be continued…

English: I went to Lithuania again. Vilnius is becoming one of my favourite cities next to London – still can’t get enough of it. I had a really good chance to go there and since everyone else was busy or had plans – I went alone. On Thursday I also got to spend some quality time with some of my Eco Lifers in Tallinn and then it was time for the long bus ride again. I didn’t have any expectations about the weekend, but that is when the best things tend to happen. I explored the city on my own, walked around Uzupis, the Old Town, climbed on top of the Three Cross mountain during the daytime as well, went to the KGB museum, experienced the chill nightlife of Vilnius again and many other things. Since I kinda said to the lithuanians that I was coming at the very last minute, people already had plans. Luckily things went that way that for the most part of the weekend I spent time with Matas. It’s amazing to spend time with someone who knows the city, knows the good (and bad haha) places to go, what to see and with whom you’re never bored. Quality time with a capital “Q”.

And what now? The semester’s coming to an end, its basically the last week of lectures and seminars and from here on, writing essays and my master’s thesis (hopefully).

lost and found

English: I’ve postponed making this post for quite some time now, hoping to live on the shadow of the last one. Nope, life goes on, the routine goes on. It’s insane that it has been a month since we arrived back from Romania. So much has happened in those weeks so it feels rather 2 months, than only one. The routine is still the same: school, work, dance practice  and again.. and this past weekend I could add Haapsalu to that list as well. Still, before that last week, a plan to go out on Wednesday suddenly came into action. It was quite random, but we had fun regardless, played the card came Reality Check and after went to the city and danced in Shooters for a while. On Friday we had a gathering with our old high school mates in Taksi pub in Haapsalu. Out of the original 36, 15 made it. We had fun talking and sharing our personal lives and how is everyone doing etc. On Saturday it was Martin’s birthday, which was also great. There was some good food, we played beerpong and there was a quiz and so on. It would be great if all my thoughts would be 100% with the activities as well, but the reality is that they are already somewhere beyond me, in the future.

half way there | rumeenia pt 1

  • Toit on vĂ€ga odav.

English: The Erasmus + Romanian project “Ecolife” is halfway done and I thought that I’d write down some thoughts.

  • Comparing to Estonia, the food is very cheap. Coke is like 4 times cheaper here, you’d get a 2 – litre bottle for only 50 euro cents.
  • The catering of the project is poor, specially if you don’t eat meat: only potatoes, WHITE BREAD, beans and an occasional cabbage. I don’t usually eat white bread at all, but here it is essential if you don’t want to starve.
  • There is a huge problem of homeless dogs and it makes me so sad. Then again, they have so many cows, sheep and horses, that the cows are even walking around the town streets freely
  • Went to a real mountain hike for a first time in my life. The views were breathtaking.
  • Did ziplining over the Dorna river, it was pretty cool
  • I have realized, hearing the stories of how lives are in other countries participating (Romania, Lithuania, Spain and Czech Republic) that the life in Estonia is actually really good and damn developed comparing to some of the others.

22!

Kogu see pikk nĂ€dalavahetus Haapsalus oli pĂ€ris tegus, alustades reedel sĂŒnnipĂ€evaga. Tuli Ă€ra see viimane taks!!

English: I’m 22!! Once again, my birthday party had a theme and this year it was RUSSIAN PARTY. Of course, people had dressed up as usual and we had some good food and everyone hopefully had a great time and the last ones left at 4 am or something. Anyway, there’s really not much to say, it was amazziiiing! This whole weekend in Haapsalu was quite busy and I loved it!
